A DAY AT "THE BEACH" (06/24)

A DAY AT "THE BEACH" (06/24)

Today's and yesterday's work are from the same location --- the Oceanfront at Virginia Beach, Virginia. When people ask me where I am from, I say I am from Virginia Beach. But if you lived there, you say you are from "The Beach". Also, Virginia Beach Boulevard is known as "The Boulevard", and what is now Interstate 264 was "The Toll Road".

I moved to "The Beach" in 1967 when my father (who was in the U.S. Navy) received orders to Norfolk. We moved in October and I was a junior in high school. Having lived in Lewes (pronounced "Lewis"), Delaware for over three years, it was one of the hardest times of my life. I was an adolescent and it was so hard to leave my best friends behind.

There was, and still is, a heavy military presence in the Tidewater Area. So when I moved, there were many kids like me whose parents were in the Navy. I made new friends with whom I am still very close to today; and I am in contact with my close friends from Lewes as well. I have friends whom I have known for over a half a century. How can you state in words feelings you cannot express because they give you so much joy. These bonds of friendship will be with me until the day I leave this world.

Well, I have really bloviated today haven't I? So much for pithy comments.
